In this role, you will be working closely with people with disabilities, clinicians, various industrial partners and engineers to develop cutting-edge, inclusive hardware and physical products that make a life-changing impact.
 You will be required to design, plan, undertake, analyse and report back on a wide range of design research activities aimed at: capturing URS and developing PDS; conducting Design Reviews throughout prototype development; assess and evaluate designs according to end-user and stakeholder needs and requirements; and document, write and publish high quality reports, and academic papers on the inclusive and user-centred aspects of the project. You will be required to work closely with Duchenne UK and other project partners to advise on user-facing activities and plan, design and deliver public engagement initiatives such as a pop-up exhibition.
 
You should have a UG and/or PGT Design quantification (or highly relevant area).

Research Contracts Associate (Maternity Cover)

You should have expertise in soft materials design, familiarity with coding, and excellent transferable skills to collaborate in a multidisciplinary team on microgel formulations.

You will develop microgel formulations for jawbone regeneration, modify synthesis protocols, perform high-throughput characterization, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Science

We are seeking an individual with expertise in soft materials design to join our multidisciplinary team developing advanced microgel formulations for pre-clinical testing in tissue engineering and accelerating wound-healing. This role focuses on machine-learning and high-throughput methodologies to accelerate the experimental design and optimisation of these microgels. The project is part of a multinational collaboration to develop and translate microgel technology for the treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (`MRONJ¿).
 
Microgel formulation is a complex multivariate problem, combining fundamental rules-of-thumb from Soft Matter Physics with the principles of Synthetic Chemistry and Process Engineering. This makes it an ideal problem to be tackled using elevated-throughput experimentation in tandem with machine learning methods, e.g., Bayesian optimisation. In this project you will develop and undertake experimental workflows to formulate cytocompatible, injectable and printable microgel formulations for jawbone regeneration. You will modify simple hydrogel synthesis protocols from the literature and apply them to a range of microgel fabrication methods, e.g., batch, microfluidic, and membrane emulsification. Your work will emphasise material cytocompatibility and the incorporation of cell-interacting moieties whose properties will be probed in collaboration with cell biology and immunology groups. High-throughput formulation and multiscale characterisation (rheology, laser-diffraction particle size analysis, confocal microscopy, computational image analysis, SAXS) methodologies will be used to generate a library of viable candidate formulations to be shipped to European partners for biological testing and to develop machine learning models that predict formulation properties.
 
This project would suit code-minded or code-curious scientists with a working familiarity of soft materials who want to work at the forefront of translational biomaterials. Researchers will work in a highly dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with a multitude of stakeholders and partners in various institutions (academic and industrial). The project requires a candidate with excellent transferable skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of partners (academic and industrial).
 
You will work closely in a multidisciplinary team with Dr Forth, Dr Sharratt and the Project Lead, Dr Katarzyna Gurzawska-Comis, at the University of Liverpool. The position combines both research and innovation functions and involves liaison with key stakeholders within the University and with external, European academic and industrial partners. The role will be based in the School of Physical Sciences. You will have access to cutting-edge facilities at the Materials Innovation Factory (MIF), an £81 million state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advanced materials research and work at the forefront of computationally accelerated materials discovery. Liverpool is an internationally recognised institution for robotics, automation, materials, and biomedical research and leads national hubs in AI for Chemistry (AIChemy) and Advanced Long-Acting Therapeutics (HALo). As Design Manager you will work with &gt;100 entrepreneurs and industry partners from the health, care and life science sectors and support exploration and development of data-driven and technology-enabled products and services that prioritise user and business needs, including Artificial Intelligence.
 
You will be a key member of the Civic Health Innovation Labs HealthTech Design Studio and report to Dr Annemarie Naylor, Director of HealthTech and Innovation Growth. You will work closely with Dr Farnaz Nickpour and CHIL¿s Technical Director as well as with colleagues from the Virtual Engineering Centre, who will provide design and technical input to help realise impactful research and innovation collaborations. You will, also, work with Civic Data Cooperative colleagues who lead CHIL¿s public and patient engagement activities.
 
Your principal duties will include developing a design strategy and managing a diverse and evolving design and innovation portfolio geared to health and care tech development. We are looking for a team player who will champion user-led design principles, co-design practices, and co-production methodologies to deliver impactful solutions that improve experiences, outcomes and efficiency, working with industry, service provider organisations and the public.
