About

Description of event (e.g. what it entails, who it’s targeting, aims) Afrofest is a two - three hour production directed and performed by members of Warwick Afro-Caribbean Society, showcasing the talent of members across the diaspora. On one night throughout the academic year, we aspire to conduct the biggest display of Afro-Caribbean history, culture and experience on campus. This includes a demonstration of our multifaceted community which raises our voices through song in the choir section; conveys a total freedom of body, mind, and spirit through dance; tells our stories and preserves our history through drama; expresses our non-monolithic identity through fashion; speaks volumes through the art of spoken word; and brings a dynamic new layer with a live band segment. We aim to delineate a touching narrative that addresses cultural and social issues within the diaspora through the theme of ‘The Glory’, taking heavy inspiration from the notion of the phrase, ‘heavy is the head that wears the crown’. This theme encompasses the exploration of glory and the heavy burdens it can impose. We delve into the pressures faced by individuals striving to achieve greatness and the complex relationship between success and self-worth. Through this, we display the beauty and complexities of our intricate culture and heritage. We have put together a leadership team and supervisory team of over 25 students, making our Coordination Team. The mission is intentional. It extends beyond storytelling. We intend to be purposeful with the narrative we build; leaving our audience with something to think about. Our vision also extends beyond the stage. The spectators of the show are just as important. Thus, we want to fill the audience with people who are not only part of the Afro Caribbean diaspora on campus, but also from other campus societies, regardless of ethnic identity. We want to set the precedent that Afrofest is for everyone and anyone to become a part of. Furthermore, we would like to extend an invitation to the likes of casting directors, modelling agencies and producers to be part of our audience in order to provide our performers with the opportunity to spearhead their career in the creative industry alongside their degrees. The entire project is not just about what is onstage. As well as individuals being able to display their talent onstage, we also plan for videographers, photographers, backstage crew and makeup artists to all be part of the ACS community as a means of promoting their talent. Afrofest will not only be unforgettable, but would also lay the foundation for a legacy to come.
