  • Prepares for surgical procedures by completing assessment of the patient and reviewing patient chart, diagnostics, and labs. Reports abnormal results to physicians and other appropriate care givers. Reviews patient history and physical and consent forms and assures completion.
  • Formulates and initiates plan of care based on patient specific needs and medical plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with members of multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changes in patient needs. Provides care based on physician orders and in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements. Delegates appropriately and provides nursing supervision in the provision of care to patients by other licensed nurses and other personnel. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
  • Prepares for surgical procedure by ensuring all appropriate supplies and instruments are available and room set up is appropriate. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
  • Documents surgical procedure in the patient record. Documentation is timely and in accordance with policy. Notes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges. Disposes of sharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.
  • Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.
  • Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies and cleaning operating rooms.
  • Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff and students, as assigned.
  • This position follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation and laser safety, and infection control.
