Responsibilities

  • Assist in surgery by helping the surgeon slice very thin tissue sections of frozen skin until they reach an unaffected area. Take the tissue samples to the lab, prepare the slides by embedding, cutting tissue if needed, staining, and putting cover slips on slides for analysis by a pathologist. Perform complex histological procedures using techniques such as grossing, staining, drying, and freezing to preserve and test samples. Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to obtain a patient diagnosis. Accession and gross tissue specimens. Process specimens including embedding, cutting, staining, coverslipping, and filing. Prepare slides using specified stain to enhance visibility under a microscope. Trim tissue specimens into blocks and fix tissue in fixing solution or formalin. Examine slides under microscope to detect deviations from the norm and report abnormalities. Record and analyze data. Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions. Preserve and store samples per established policies and procedures. Maintain, clean, and repair equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. Establish and monitor quality control programs and perform required quality control, maintenance, and quality assurance.
