Responsibilities

  • Performs routine tasks and refers complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Sorts and shelves library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Maintains proper order of materials through frequent shelf reading and straightening. Shifts books and other materials to avoid overcrowding of shelves. Notifies appropriate staff of damaged items and any other cataloguing issues.
  • Retrieves and processes returned library materials from the book drop. Checks materials for completeness and damage, returns them to circulation, or forwards them to the appropriate personnel for resolution as necessary. Sorts items for hold, transit, or shelving.
  • Provides information, directions, or referrals to assist patrons. Guides patrons on access to the online catalog and self-checkout. Collects holds placed by patrons for pick-up or to be dispatched to other library locations. Refers patrons to appropriate staff for in-depth questions or reader’s advisory services.
  • Performs proper library opening and closing procedures. Performs cleanup of library materials and public areas. Assists with the maintenance of library displays and ensuring all book displays are filled.
  • Assists and participates in library programs and ensures safety precautions are maintained in the youth service areas.
  • Reviews and analyzes library guidelines and procedures and completes mandatory development training and attends staff meetings.
