Requirements

  • Graduate from a recognized Community College Physiotherapist Assistant program that meets the standard set by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada or “an internationally trained Physiotherapist who has completed the credentialing process may be considered”
  • BLS-C
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, their families and health care team members
  • Must be cooperative and possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work with physiotherapy and health care team members
  • Organizational ability to complete assigned work and manage changing staffing and caseload levels
  • Previous experience working with physically and/or cognitively impaired people is an asset
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics, anatomy, basic computer skills and training in electro-physical agents and other physiotherapy specific interventions
  • Knowledge of common diseases and disabilities as well as the treatments, precautions and contraindications for them
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Responsibilities

  • The Physiotherapist reports to the Rehabilitation Services Manager and assesses, diagnoses and treats patients in a tertiary care setting who present with actual or potential impairment, pain, functional limitations or disabilities.
  • Physiotherapy assessment involves obtaining a detailed medical history, performing specific and standardized tests and evaluation procedures to determine a physical diagnosis.
  • Holistic treatment programs are developed using exercises, education, and manual, mechanical, electrical and hydrotherapy techniques to assist the patient in regaining and/or maintaining an optimal level of function.
  • The Physiotherapist is educated and communicates with other health disciplines, the general public, family members and caregivers in regard to health promotion, physiotherapy treatment and patient management.
  • This position provides supervision and evaluation of physiotherapy students and supervision of physiotherapy assistants and aides.
  • As a member of a clinical team, the Physiotherapist collaborates with colleagues to determine team goals and objectives, participates in the evaluation of team effectiveness, and solves problems and shares responsibilities.
