Drama - Our Town                                                     Classical Play - The Odyssey**Where else can you find such a wide variety of roles, from acting, directing and producing, to designing the entire aesthetic of a show? Participating in Drama offers an abundance of experiences that are not only great for a well-rounded CV, but also a chance to socialise with a diverse bunch of people who share similar interests and ambitions.Our ethos as UCL Drama Society is to provide and create as many opportunities as possible for as many people as possible, regardless of dramatic experience. Thus, we offer a range of opportunities at a variety of levels, from friendly workshops to large-scale productions. Our weekly workshops include introductions to acting, practitioners and theatre companies, and even talks and events run by industry professionals. Last year we had the privilege of welcoming the very actor who played Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy – I think we all know who that is!We aim to put on two large-scale shows a year (often at our very own Blooms!), as well as several other smaller shows. Last year, we had the honour of putting on Alice Birch’s Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again and Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, both of which sold well and received high praise from UCL and beyond. The latter received Best Bloomsbury Production at the 2020 Arts Awards, highlighting the quality of UCL Drama productions.Our smaller shows are a fast-paced and exhilarating way of discovering your dramatic identity with other talented student theatre-makers. Past productions have taken place in London theatres, UCL buildings and even outside as promenade performances.As well as plays, we often put on festivals throughout the year, focusing on a range of themes, such as New Writing, Foreign Language, and London University Drama Socs. These are a great chance for actors, directors and producers to get involved regardless of experience, as well as an opportunity to showcase more experimental theatre.In line with UCL’s protocol, we are taking an online-first approach with our society activities for this term. However, we are determined to ensure that UCL Drama remains an active society and therefore have lots of exciting plans in place, such as:Quizzes          Online Read-through       Meet the Committee      Intro to directing, producing, design….        Online Play Watches       Weekly Socials        Acting Workshops.         Monologue Evening      Scavenger Hunts.    Socials with other Arts communities.  Talks with Industry Professionals          Writing Workshops​ Regardless of whether you’re living the London life or chilling in the comforts of your own home, UCL Drama is here for all your creative and social needs.One line which I feel best sums up our approach to Drama this year is that of Peter Brook (The Empty Space): “I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.” Whether virtual or in-person, there will still be invaluable opportunities to get involved with Drama this year-- trust us!
