What is the purpose of the Student Social Work Clinical Placement?
The purpose of the Student Social Work Clinical Placement is to support FMCNA's mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy while providing students with practical experience in the field of social work under the supervision of licensed professionals.
What are the primary responsibilities of the student intern?
The primary responsibilities of the student intern include patient assessment and care planning, providing psycho-educational counseling, participating in interdisciplinary team discussions, educating patients and families about kidney disease, and assisting with referrals to community resources.
Who oversees the student intern during their placement?
The Clinical Manager assigns and closely monitors all SW Intern assignments with direct supervision from a Social Worker Field Instructor (SWFI) based on an agreed education plan.
What kind of education is required for this internship?
A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required for this internship, as well as a commitment to outstanding customer service and the desire to deliver superior care to patients.
Are there any restrictions on patient care for interns?
Yes, interns cannot work under the supervision of a family member, nor can they care for a patient who is a family member. If a family member is a patient at the facility, the intern will be scheduled accordingly or assigned to another patient.
What type of environment will the intern be working in?
The intern will work in a healthcare facility environment, which includes moderate noise levels, air temperature control, and potential exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
Is there a minimum number of required field education hours?
Yes, a minimum number of required field education hours are established by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) for this internship.
What kind of travel is expected for the student intern?
The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various community locations, as well as possibly attending regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
What is the focus of the psychosocial support provided by the intern?
The psychosocial support provided by the intern focuses on patient assessments, personalized care planning, education about kidney disease, and facilitating discussions about advance directives, as well as referrals to community resources.
Are there additional duties assigned beyond the main responsibilities?
Yes, the intern may perform additional duties as assigned throughout their placement.
