Responsibilities

  • Manages daily operational and administrative functions of II academic advising & curriculum unit
  • Reviews and implements technology systems and communication strategies planned in alignment with student and academic program needs
  • Establishes and implements best practices in student services
  • Manages staffing resources to meet needs of the II Academic Advising & Curriculum sub-unit, via efficient operational practices and robust staff training
  • Work with Advising team to assure sufficient availability for one-one advising, walk-in advising, pop-up advising, and virtual advising appointments
  • Performs ad hoc research efforts, including identifying and cataloging best practices and emerging trends in International and Area Studies
  • Provides higher level faculty and center support for curriculum development, MIRS Admissions and funding, program development, updates on LSA/Rackham policies and guidelines, and drafting policy proposals on behalf of II undergraduate and graduate program faculty directors.
  • Manages overall curriculum for II programs including communication with centers and programs on what they plan to offer as well as with faculty on preferences for time and day of courses. Once overall curriculum is determined, Lead works with the rest of the team to update the time schedule and arrange meet-togethers/cross lists
  • Oversees II compliance with Provost's guidelines for course scheduling
  • Acts on behalf of ASM to administer curricular changes and program updates with the help of advising team
  • Consults with undergraduate and graduate program faculty directors to provide expert advice on program development in regard to major/minor, subplan, and certificate change and approval processes
  • Acts on behalf of the ASM to establish & enforce policy, protocols, and processes related to all matters of student services and curriculum coordination in the II
  • On behalf of ASM, provides status reports on student progress and curricular management, exchanges regular, relevant information with II managers and faculty directors
  • Directs and develops tracking and reporting systems for collecting, analyzing, and regularly disseminating retention data and student persistence reports
  • Work with ASM to hire and onboard GSIs for II courses including GSI position description and posting, Application management, Fraction Calculation and Offer Letter creation, GSI orientation, GSI office and office hour arrangements, GSI Key and CCure initiation
  • Works with ASM to advocate for optimal GSI allocations from LSA Budget and monitor and enforce adherence to LSA Budget GSI hiring and FC best practices.
  • Works with ASM to develop and administer GSI Orientation in coordination with II faculty and GEO
  • Works with ASM to plan LEO orientation for new lecturers
  • Works with advising team to identify gaps and develop content related to academic program guidebooks, program administration manuals, and student handbooks
  • On behalf of ASM, develops and implements advising approaches based upon student-centered and culturally-responsive values
  • Promotes student learning and development by designing, implementing, and evaluating student advising for undergraduate and graduate programs of study
  • Supports the ASM by identifying processes or patterns of action that hinder or delay student services
  • On behalf of ASM, serves as primary contact for students and parents with concerns related to academic program and overall student experience
  • On behalf of ASM, and in collaboration with II center faculty directors, develops and implements specific strategic interventions for students of concern
  • Across the II, maintains a standard of sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Offers student advising appointments during peak times as needed to support Advising team
  • Provides daily functional supervision of II Academic Advising & Curriculum subunit of the Academic Services Team: 3 full-time staff members
  • Provides supervision of 2-3 Graduate Student Staff and works in collaboration with Graduate Coordinator to oversee their work and budget for approximately 40 co-curricular events for II graduate students.
  • In collaboration with the ASM, provides staff coaching and professional development in alignment with broader Academic Services and II professional development objectives, maintaining consistency for adherence to U-M and LSA expectations
  • Determines work assignments and balance of workload across Academic Advising & Curriculum subunit: assigns roles, responsibilities, and tasks in accordance with units fluctuating needs
  • In collaboration with ASM, redistributes work across the broader Academic Services unit (fellowships & grants advisors and administrative support staff) to manage and adjust to the changing service needs of the II
  • In consultation with ASM, provides oversight for the Academic Advising Operational Budget, MIRS Program Budget, Rackham Block Grant Budget, FLAS Cost Share Budget, and RMA Cost Share Budget: with a combined total of approximately $200,000 annually
  • As part of the MIRS Program Budget, supports the graduate student staff to plan and budget for events and submit and track expenses in a timely and accurate manner
  • Collaborate with ASM and F&G team to fund MIRS students as well as streamline funding notifications (MIRS and Center funding) and budgeting for incoming and returning graduate students.
  • Supports the ASM and advising team in planning and executing several key events: II Campus Visit Days, Graduate Student Orientation, and undergraduate events throughout the year.
  • Works closely with ASM, DGS, DUGS, and Academic Program Specialist to support higher level tasks for II Graduation Ceremony, including but not limited to: Keynote speaker confirmation, coordinating faculty participation, student bio oversight, run of show, and day-of management of the event.
  • Works with ASM and advising team to implement marketing and promotional plans and maximize outreach efforts
